A boat repair bill is three things: finding the fault, the time to fix it, and the parts. This page explains how each one is worked out, what you're told before anyone drives anywhere, and what makes a job cost more than it was quoted.

How a job gets priced
1. You tell us what it's doing. Not what you think is wrong — what it's actually doing. A lot gets narrowed down on the phone, and some of it gets solved there without anyone being charged.
2. We tell you what coming out costs, before we set off. Including the diagnosis. You decide with the number in front of you, not after the van is in the driveway.
3. We diagnose, then quote. You get the finding and a price for the repair before anything is disassembled. Routine jobs — annual service, impellers, gear oil, oil and filter, anodes, compression tests — are quoted as a fixed price for your motor rather than by the hour.
4. Nothing changes without a phone call. If the job moves outside the quote, work stops and we call. Nobody gets an invoice with a surprise on it.
Parts are itemised separately from labour on the invoice, so you can see which is which.
Payment terms are confirmed when we book. Nothing about the money should be new information on the day.

What we don't charge for
- The phone call. Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it's likely to be, including when it's something you can sort yourself in ten minutes.
- A quote. Written estimates are free.
- Coming out inside Columbia County. No call-out charge in the county. Beyond it, travel is quoted before we book and never added afterwards — see the service area.
- Coming back for a warranty issue. Warranty terms come in writing with the quote, before you commit to anything.
What pushes a job above the range
We'd rather you know these upfront than hear them as excuses afterwards:
- Seized or corroded fasteners. A bolt that shears turns a one-hour job into three. Common on motors that live in the water year-round.
- Parts availability. Model-specific components sometimes need ordering, and older or orphaned motors occasionally need sourcing rather than ordering.
- What the diagnosis finds. A no-start that turns out to be a failed powerhead isn't a no-start job any more.
- Access. Inboards in tight engine bays, and drives that have to come off before anything else can start.
- Deferred maintenance. A motor that hasn't been serviced in five seasons rarely needs only the thing you called about.
You approve any change before it happens. If the job moves outside the quote, work stops and we call.
Which jobs are a set price, and which are quoted
Set price for your motor — annual service and tune-up · water pump and impeller · gear oil service · engine oil and filter · anodes · compression test · winterisation and spring commissioning. The figure varies by motor size, cylinder count and two- versus four-stroke, so tell us what you have and we'll give you the number for it.
Quoted after we've looked — lower unit repair · skeg repair · bellows and drive work · rebuilds · repowers · anything on an inboard, jet or diesel. "Milky gear oil" covers everything from a seal to a replacement gearcase, and pretending otherwise before we've measured anything would just be a number we'd have to take back.
Inboard, sterndrive, jet and diesel work costs more than equivalent outboard work, and the reason is access rather than markup — getting to the engine is most of the job.
Why we do it this way
Almost nobody in this trade will talk numbers before an appointment, and the reason usually given — "every job is different" — is only half true. Diagnosis varies. An impeller replacement doesn't.
You should be able to work out whether to call before you've spent fifteen minutes on the phone finding out. And the number you're told on the dock should be the number on the invoice.

Why is inboard work more expensive than outboard?
Access. An outboard is worked on standing at the transom; an inboard means getting into an engine bay, and sometimes removing a drive before the actual job can begin.
