What an anode actually does
Put two different metals in water with an electrical path between them and one of them corrodes to protect the other. That's galvanic corrosion, and it's not optional — it's chemistry.
An anode is a deliberately sacrificial lump of softer metal bolted to your motor. It's there to be eaten instead of your gearcase, your trim tabs and your propeller. Every gram of anode that disappears is a gram of your lower unit that didn't.
When the anode is gone, the process doesn't stop. It just moves on to the next-softest thing — which is the aluminium your gearcase is made from, and that damage doesn't reverse.
The half-worn rule
Replace at 50% consumed, not when they're gone.
An anode that's half eaten has considerably less than half its protective capacity left — the surface area has dropped and so has the current it can supply. A "still got some left" anode is often already failing to protect the motor.
If yours are wasted, pitted or crumbling, they stopped working a while ago.
Where they are on your motor
More places than most owners check:
- The trim tab above the propeller — the big obvious one, and often the only one people know about
- A block or ring anode on the gearcase, varies by model
- Inside the powerhead on some motors — a plug anode in the cooling passages
- On the trim cylinders and rams
- On the transom bracket
- A separate anode on the propeller, on some setups
We check all of them. It's common to find one replaced regularly and three that have never been touched.
Fresh water, salt water and the Columbia
Salt water is harder on anodes and consumes them faster — but fresh water is not "no corrosion," and this is where a lot of Columbia County owners get caught out.
Marina shore power is the bigger risk here. Stray current from a boat's own wiring, or from a neighbour's, dramatically accelerates galvanic activity. A boat that lives on shore power in a moorage can eat anodes far faster than one on a trailer, and rapidly disappearing anodes are a symptom worth investigating rather than just replacing.
Zinc, aluminium or magnesium. They're not interchangeable. Zinc is the traditional saltwater choice; aluminium works in both and is now common; magnesium is for fresh water and is consumed quickly in salt. Fitting the wrong type gives you either inadequate protection or anodes that vanish in a season. We fit what suits where the boat actually lives.
What we do
Inspect every anode position on the motor, replace what's below 50%, use the correct alloy for your water, and — the part that's routinely missed — clean the mounting surfaces.
An anode has to make solid electrical contact with the metal it's protecting. Bolted over paint, corrosion or old sealant, it does nothing at all while looking perfectly correct. A shiny new anode that isn't grounded is decoration.

If yours disappear fast
Anodes wasting in a single season point at something:
- Stray current from your boat's wiring or a neighbouring boat on the same dock
- Wrong alloy for the water
- Too few anodes for the setup
- A bonding fault elsewhere on the boat
Worth diagnosing rather than replacing repeatedly — the current eating the anodes that fast is also working on everything else.

FAQ
How often should outboard anodes be replaced?
Inspect a few times a season, replace at half worn. Annually is a sensible default for most boats.
Can I replace anodes myself?
Yes — it's mostly a spanner job. Two things people get wrong: fitting the wrong alloy, and bolting a new anode over corrosion or paint so it makes no electrical contact.
Do I need anodes in fresh water?
Yes. Fresh water is gentler, not harmless — and marina shore power makes stray-current corrosion a real issue regardless of salinity.
Should I paint my anodes?
Never. Paint insulates them and they stop working entirely.
Zinc or aluminium?
Aluminium suits most Columbia County boats and works in both fresh and salt. Zinc is the traditional saltwater option. Magnesium is fresh-water only.
My anodes vanish every season. Why?
Usually stray current, sometimes the wrong alloy. It's worth finding the cause — whatever is consuming them is also working on your gearcase.
