Three different things get called "jet"

They share a principle and almost nothing else:

Jet boats — Rotax or Yamaha engine driving an integrated pump. Scarab, Yamaha AR and SX, Chaparral Vortex. No prop, no outdrive, shallow draft and a hull that will happily beach itself.

Outboard jets — a conventional outboard with the gearcase swapped for a jet foot. Common on drift boats and shallow-river fishing rigs. The powerhead is ordinary outboard; everything below the plate is not. Drift boat and sled service →

Inboard jet sleds — a marinized V8 driving a Hamilton or American Turbine pump. The Columbia, Deschutes and Rogue river boats. Big power, thin water, and a pump that eats whatever the river is carrying.

What actually goes wrong with a jet drive

Impeller-to-wear-ring clearance. The one that gets misdiagnosed most. As the gap between impeller and wear ring opens up, the pump stops moving the water it used to — you lose top end and hole shot while the engine runs perfectly. Owners chase fuel and ignition problems for a season before anyone measures the clearance, which takes about fifteen minutes. Impeller and wear ring service →

Intake damage. Gravel, sand and river debris come straight through the grate. Nicked impeller blades, a scored wear ring, a bent intake grate or a dinged ride plate all show up as vibration or lost speed.

Cavitation. Air pulled into the intake, usually from a damaged grate, a hull issue or running too shallow. It sounds like a slipping clutch and it destroys impellers.

Rotax specifics. Closed-loop cooling means the engine never sees raw water — which is a genuine advantage, until the closed system is neglected. Supercharged models carry their own scheduled service that owners routinely defer because nothing feels wrong yet.

Driveshaft, seals and bearing carrier. The carbon ring seal and bearing carrier are wear items. A leak here puts water in the bilge and, ignored, takes the bearing with it.

Reverse gate and linkage. Bent buckets, seized linkage and cables that won't hold position — usually from beaching or debris rather than wear.


The trade-off nobody explains

Worth understanding before you decide a jet drive is underperforming.

A jet drive costs you roughly 20% of your engine's power. That's not a fault and it isn't wear — it's the price of the design. Compared with a prop, some of what the engine makes goes into moving water through a pump rather than into forward thrust.

What you buy with it is water nobody else can run. Full throttle in about two inches of water. That's what puts a jet boat up rivers, over gravel bars and into places a prop-driven hull can't follow without losing a lower unit.

So if your jet boat feels slower than a comparable prop boat, it probably is — by design. If it feels slower than it used to, that's different, and it's usually clearance. More here.

And the downside of running shallow: you eventually suck up gravel. Everything in a jet pump runs to a tolerance, and gravel takes it out of spec. Once that happens the pump can only move so much water no matter what the engine does — which is why a jet boat that's lost speed almost never has an engine problem.


A custom build

One of the more enjoyable jobs: a mini jet boat, about six feet long, built up from scratch. An entire jet-ski drivetrain transplanted in, welded up and set to spec so it lined up and didn't leak.

It ended up ripping down the river. Fabrication and drivetrain work at that level isn't something we sell as a service — but it's a fair indication that jet drives here get more than a bolt-on parts swap.

Why jet work is hard to get done

A jet drive shares almost no service procedure with a prop motor. There's no lower unit, no gear oil, no skeg, no prop hub — and instead a set of tolerances, a pump to pull, and failure modes that look like engine problems but aren't.

Dealers generally keep Rotax work inside their own service departments. Independent shops set up for outboards often aren't equipped to pull and reseal a pump.

We do jet work at the boat — clearance checks, impeller and wear ring, intake and grate damage, seals and scheduled Rotax service, at your slip, lift or driveway. Work needing the boat out of the water gets flagged before we start.

Frequently asked questions

My jet boat has lost top speed but the engine runs fine. What is it?
Almost always impeller-to-wear-ring clearance. The engine makes the same power; the pump just stops converting it. It's measurable in about fifteen minutes and cheap to fix compared to what people usually chase first. More on wear ring service.

Do you service Rotax engines?
Yes — scheduled maintenance, closed-loop cooling service and supercharged-model intervals. This is the work dealers usually keep in-house.

I sucked up gravel at the ramp. How bad is it?
Depends what it hit. Nicked blades can often be reconditioned; a scored wear ring is a replacement. Either way it's worth inspecting before the next trip, because a damaged impeller cavitates and cavitation accelerates everything.

Do you work on outboard jets, not just jet boats?
Yes. The powerhead is standard outboard work and the jet foot is its own thing. Common on drift boats and river sleds — more on those.

What about inboard jet sleds with a Hamilton or American Turbine pump?
Yes, both the engine and the pump.

How often does a jet pump need servicing?
Clearance is worth checking annually, and immediately after any debris strike. There's no gear oil to change, but seals, the bearing carrier and the wear ring are all wear items.

Can you do the work in the water?
Most of it, yes. Some pump work is easier with the boat on a trailer or lift, and we'll tell you which before booking.
