The costs nobody quotes you upfront
A repower is rarely just the price of the motor. What gets left out until late:
Rigging. Controls, cables or electronic throttle, wiring harness, gauges or a digital display, key switch and lanyard. On an older boat moving to a modern motor this is frequently a substantial line item on its own — the new motor may not speak to anything currently on your dash.
The transom. A new motor is often heavier than what it replaces, and transom condition on an older boat is not guaranteed. We check for rot, delamination and soft spots before anything is ordered. Finding a soft transom after you've bought a motor is the worst possible sequence.
Height and setback. Transom height has to match the shaft length, and mounting height affects performance. Getting it wrong costs speed and can cause ventilation.
The propeller. A different motor almost always wants a different prop. Budgeting for one avoids a boat that runs badly on a brand-new engine.
Fuel system. Older tanks, lines and connectors sometimes need replacing to suit a modern motor — and ethanol-era rubber often should be replaced anyway.
Steering. Higher-power motors may require hydraulic steering where mechanical was adequate before.

This page assumes the decision is made. Everything below is about doing the repower properly: what it actually costs, what the boat needs, and what gets missed until late.
Repowering an outboard
Comparatively straightforward — the motor bolts to the transom.
Old motor removed · transom inspected and prepared · new motor mounted at correct height · rigging installed and routed · fuel system connected and checked · props fitted and tested · gauges calibrated · water test and prop-pitch confirmation.
Four-stroke or two-stroke? New two-strokes are direct-injection and a legitimate choice — lighter, better hole shot, simpler. Four-strokes are quieter, more economical and now dominate. Weight is the deciding factor on smaller boats more often than people expect.
Repowering an inboard or sterndrive
More involved, because the engine is inside the boat.
Engine out through the hatch or via a lift · mounts, stringers and bed inspected · drive and transom assembly assessed · new engine fitted and aligned properly · exhaust, cooling and fuel connections · controls and instrumentation · bellows and drive service while access is open.
Alignment is not optional. An engine installed out of alignment destroys couplers, gimbal bearings and transmission bearings, and the damage shows up a season later looking like something else.
A remanufactured long block is often the better-value route on inboards than a complete new package — worth comparing before defaulting to either.
Is your boat worth repowering?
Sometimes the honest answer is no.
Yes, usually, when: the hull and transom are sound, you like the boat, and the motor is the only major problem.
Think hard when: the repower approaches or exceeds what the boat is worth, the transom or stringers need work, or you've been thinking about a different boat anyway.
A repower can outlast the boat. On a sound hull that's excellent value. On a tired one it's money that doesn't come back.
