Outboard Won't Start — What to Check, in Order

An outboard that cranks but won't fire is a fuel or spark problem nine times out of ten, and the fastest way to find out which is to pull a plug and look at it.

First question: does it crank?

Everything forks here, and the two branches have almost nothing in common.

It cranks — turns over but won't fire. Fuel, spark or compression. Skip to that section.

It doesn't crank — nothing, or a click. That's electrical or a safety interlock, and it's usually the cheaper of the two.


If it won't crank at all

1. The safety interlocks. Kill lanyard clipped on, and the throttle in neutral. The neutral safety switch does exactly what it's designed to do and it doesn't care how sure you are that it's in neutral — move the lever fully, wiggle it, try again. No apology needed for checking this first; it's a real share of the calls we're paid to attend.

2. The battery, properly. Not "it's a new battery" — actually check it. A marine battery that reads fine at rest can collapse under cranking load. Lights and gauges coming on proves very little.

3. The connections. Corroded or loose terminals are the single most common electrical fault on a boat. Green or white crust, or a terminal you can turn by hand, is your answer. Clean them properly rather than wiggling them until it works.

4. Fuses and the main switch. Check the inline fuses and the battery isolator.

5. A click but no crank. The solenoid is getting a signal and not passing current — a failing solenoid, a poor earth, or a starter drawing more than the circuit can supply.

6. Nothing at all, and the flywheel won't turn by hand. Stop. A seized engine is a different problem entirely, and continuing to crank at it makes things worse. Call us before spending money on parts.


If it cranks but won't fire

Pull a plug, crank the engine over, and look at it. This one step splits the problem in half.

Wet with fuel → fuel is arriving. Go to spark.
Bone dry → fuel isn't arriving. Go to fuel.


Fuel — the cause in most cases

Almost every no-start we attend after a boat has sat is fuel, and almost every one of those traces back to the same thing: the last tank of petrol went off.

How old is it? Ethanol blends absorb moisture and degrade within months. A boat that sat through a wet Oregon winter with a part-full tank has fuel that is no longer really fuel.

Is the tank vent open? A sealed tank pulls a vacuum and starves the engine. Trivial, and easy to overlook.

Does the primer bulb go firm? If it stays soft, air is getting in — a cracked line, a loose connector or a failed bulb. If it goes rock hard and stays there, something downstream is blocked.

Water in the fuel. Check the water-separating filter. Water sits below the petrol and reaches the engine first once there's enough of it.

The fuel filter. Cheap, quick, and frequently the whole answer.

On EFI motors — fuel pump, pressure and injectors, which need gauges and usually diagnostic software rather than guesswork.

If it fires briefly and dies, or starts but won't hold an idle, the problem is inside the carburettor rather than in delivery — that's a different diagnosis and it's here.

Flooded? Genuinely common after over-priming or repeated choking. Full throttle, no choke, crank for several seconds. If it coughs and clears, that was it.


Spark

The plugs themselves. Fouled, worn or wet-fouled from repeated starting attempts. New plugs are cheap and rule out a whole branch.

Test for spark properly. Plug back into the lead, threads grounded against the block, crank. A strong blue spark is healthy. Weak yellow, intermittent, or nothing points further upstream.

Leads and coils. Perished leads and failing coils are ordinary age-related faults, and they often show up warm rather than cold — a motor that starts fine cold and won't restart hot is a classic coil symptom.

The stator or trigger, on motors that use them. Diagnosis needs meter work.

A stuck kill switch or ignition switch. The circuit is designed to stop the engine, and when it fails it usually fails in the direction of stopping it.


Compression

If fuel and spark are both confirmed good and it still won't fire, the question becomes mechanical.

A sudden total no-start from compression alone is uncommon — engines usually decline rather than stop overnight — but it happens, especially after an overheat. If it overheated before it stopped starting, read this first.

A compression test settles it, and it's worth doing before any more money goes into parts.


What's worth trying yourself

Reasonable: interlocks, battery and connections, fuel age, tank vent, primer bulb, fuel filter, spark plugs, basic spark test, clearing a flood.

Worth handing over: carburettor rebuilds, EFI diagnosis, ignition faults beyond the plug, compression testing, and anything where you've already replaced two parts without success — that's a diagnosis problem, and it's where a no-start gets expensive.

What it costs

The reason to get it diagnosed rather than keep buying parts: a no-start has perhaps eight plausible causes, and replacing them in sequence usually costs more than testing once.

Why won't my outboard start after sitting all winter?
The fuel. Ethanol petrol degrades over months and leaves residue in the carburettor's small passages. It's the single most common reason a motor that was fine in autumn won't start in spring.

My outboard cranks but won't fire. Where do I start?
Pull a plug and look at it. Wet means fuel is arriving and you should investigate spark; dry means the opposite. Two minutes, and it halves the problem.

The starter clicks but doesn't turn the engine. What is that?
Usually a battery that can't supply cranking current, a corroded connection, or a failing solenoid. Check the connections before buying anything.

Could it just be the kill switch?
Yes, and often is — either the lanyard isn't seated or the switch itself has failed. It's the first thing to check because it's free.

I flooded it. Now what?
Full throttle, no choke, crank for several seconds to clear it. If that doesn't work, pull the plugs, let it air, dry or replace them.
