Outboard Won't Idle or Keeps Stalling
An outboard that runs fine at speed but won't hold an idle is telling you something specific: the idle circuit is plugged, and that is almost always what the last tank of ethanol fuel left behind.

Why "fine at speed, dies at idle" is such a useful symptom
A carburettor is effectively two fuel systems in one body.
At speed, fuel flows through the main jet — a relatively large passage that tolerates a surprising amount of contamination.
At idle, fuel flows through the idle (or pilot) circuit — passages small enough that a trace of varnish blocks them completely.
So a motor that pulls hard but won't tick over has told you exactly where the problem is. The main jet is clear and the idle circuit isn't. That's not a vague fuel problem; it's a specific one, and it narrows the job considerably.
On EFI motors the equivalent is a partially blocked injector or a fault in idle air control — same symptom, different hardware.
The usual causes, in order
1. Varnish in the idle circuit. Ethanol petrol degrades over months and leaves a residue behind. Small passages block first. This is the answer most of the time, especially on a motor that sat over winter.
2. Old fuel still in the tank. Sometimes the fuel itself is simply finished — no amount of carburettor work fixes a tank of bad petrol.
3. Idle mixture out of adjustment. On motors with adjustable screws, they drift or get fiddled with. Cheap to correct if that's genuinely all it is.
4. An air leak. Perished intake gaskets, a cracked hose, or — on two-strokes — failing crank seals, which cause a lean idle no carburettor work will ever fix. Worth ruling in or out early.
5. Idle speed set too low, sometimes after other work.
6. Weak spark at low rpm. Coils and ignition components frequently fail at idle before they fail anywhere else, because idle is where spark energy is lowest. A motor that idles badly and misfires under load is pointing here rather than at fuel.
7. A fouled plug, especially on a two-stroke that does a lot of trolling. More on that.
What you can check yourself
How old is the fuel? More than a few months, or over a winter, and it's the prime suspect regardless of anything else.
Does it idle better with a little choke? That points to a lean condition — a blocked idle circuit or an air leak.
Does it idle better in neutral than in gear? Load exposes a marginal idle. Normal to a degree; dramatic difference means it's on the edge.
Pull the plugs and read them. Black and sooty means rich. White or clean means lean. Full plug-reading guide.
Try fresh fuel. Cheapest test available. If a fresh tank fixes it, you had bad fuel rather than a bad carburettor.
What it usually takes to fix
A proper carburettor clean — bowl off, jets out, passages cleared, new gaskets. Not aerosol cleaner through the intake, which does not reach the passages that are actually blocked.
On multi-carb motors, all of them, then synchronised. One carburettor out of step causes an uneven idle that looks like ignition trouble.
Fresh fuel and a new filter as a matter of course.
Ignition tested rather than assumed, if the fuel side comes up clean.
Carburettor and fuel work is part of annual service →
Stopping it coming back
- Run the carburettor dry before storage, or fit and use a fuel shutoff
- Stabilise fuel that stays in the tank, and don't store it part-full
- Use it more often — the single most effective preventative, and the least practical
- Annual service catches a fuel system going off before it strands you
FAQ
Why does my outboard start then die?
Usually it runs on the fuel already in the bowl, then stops when the blocked idle circuit can't supply more. Classic stale-fuel signature.
Why does it run fine at speed but not at idle?
Different fuel passages. The main jet is large and tolerant; the idle circuit is tiny and blocks first.
Will fuel additive fix it?
Occasionally, if caught very early. Once varnish has hardened in the passages, cleaner in the tank won't reach it — the carburettor has to come apart.
Is rough idle serious?
Not dangerous, but it rarely improves on its own, and a lean idle on a two-stroke can do real damage over time.
Could it be spark rather than fuel?
Yes. Ignition components often fail at idle first. If it also misfires under load, suspect spark before fuel.
How much does a carb clean cost?
By carburettor count — a single-carb 9.9 and a six-carb V6 are different jobs. Pricing.
My motor idles badly only in gear. Normal?
Some difference is normal. A large one means the idle is marginal and worth adjusting properly.
