The Mercury outboard range
FourStroke — the current mainstream range, from portables up. Straightforward to service and generally durable.
Verado — supercharged four-strokes. The supercharger carries its own scheduled service that owners routinely defer, because nothing feels wrong until it does. If your Verado has never had that interval done and it's past due, that's the first conversation.
OptiMax — direct-injected two-strokes. The air compressor and the injection system are the areas that need brand-specific attention, and they're the reason a general shop is often reluctant.
Older carburetted two-strokes — still plenty of them around and still worth running. Two-stroke work.
MerCruiser sterndrives
Alpha drives — the volume seller. Two things worth knowing:
The raw-water pump is inside the drive, not on the engine. That means the drive has to come off to change an impeller — a genuinely different job and a different price from a Bravo. More on that.
Shift cable adjustment matters more on an Alpha than most drives. Set incorrectly, it wears the shift mechanism, and the symptom looks like a failing drive. It's a common and fixable misdiagnosis.
Bravo drives — heavier duty, engine-mounted raw-water pump, different service pattern and different parts entirely. Bravo One, Two and Three are not interchangeable in service terms.
Both — bellows, gimbal bearing and transom assembly are the maintenance items that decide how long the drive lasts.
Diagnostics
Mercury's engine management is proprietary, and the current generation genuinely needs brand software to read faults, check parameters and perform some service procedures. A generic scan tool tells you very little.
STATE WHAT YOU HAVE — e.g. "We run Mercury CDS G3" or "We have SmartCraft diagnostic capability." This is the most important sentence on this page. It's the difference between claiming the brand and being able to work on it, and it's what an owner is actually trying to find out.
Parts and serial numbers
Mercury parts are well supported, including for older motors — one of the advantages of the brand's market share.
We need the serial number, not just the model. Mercury made running changes within model years, and the serial is what identifies the right parts. It's on a plate on the transom bracket on outboards, and on the engine on MerCruiser installations. Send a photo and we'll sort the rest.

Do you service Mercury outboards and MerCruiser sterndrives?
Both. They share diagnostics and much of the drive hardware, so it makes sense to have one person who knows both.
Do you have Mercury diagnostic software?
Answer explicitly. This is the question this page exists to answer.
How often does a Verado supercharger need servicing?
On Mercury's published interval for your model year. It's one of the most commonly deferred items on the brand, and skipping it is expensive.
My Alpha drive needs an impeller. Why is it more than a quote I got elsewhere?
Because on an Alpha the raw-water pump is inside the drive, so the drive has to come off. A quote that doesn't account for that is for a different job.
Can you get parts for an older Mercury?
Generally yes — support for the brand is better than most. Send the serial number and we'll confirm.
Do I need to use a Mercury dealer?
For warranty work, yes. Outside warranty, an independent with the right diagnostics is usually faster.
Bravo One, Two or Three — does it matter?
Considerably. Different ratios, different applications, different parts. The serial tells us which you have.
