Parts are the whole game
This is what separates a vintage motor from an old one. The mechanical work is straightforward — the difficulty is knowing what's available, from where, and in what quality.
What's genuinely still available: water pump impeller kits, points and condensers, coils, carburettor kits, seals and gaskets, decals and reproduction cowling graphics for the popular models. The Johnson/Evinrude and Mercury families of that era are well supported precisely because so many survive.
What's harder: model-specific castings, gearcase components, and anything for the smaller marques. Sometimes the answer is a donor motor rather than a part.
What to be careful about: reproduction quality varies enormously. Some reproduction coils and condensers fail quickly enough that you'll be doing the job twice, and knowing which to avoid is most of what experience buys you here. NOS is often better than new, if you can find it.

Ethanol is the modern enemy of an old motor
Worth understanding before you put fuel in anything from this era.
Cork floats. Many pre-1970 carburettors use a lacquered cork float. Ethanol strips the lacquer, the cork absorbs fuel, the float sinks and the carburettor floods. This is one of the most common problems we see on a motor that ran fine forty years ago.
Rubber and neoprene. Fuel lines, primer bulbs, pump diaphragms and seals from that era were never designed for ethanol. They swell, harden and disintegrate — and the debris ends up in the carburettor.
Old fuel tanks. Ethanol lifts decades of varnish and rust off tank walls and delivers it downstream.
Use ethanol-free fuel if you run a vintage motor. It's available around Oregon if you look, and it costs less than doing the fuel system twice.
What a motor that's sat 20 years needs
A predictable list, in roughly this order:
1. Compression check first. Before anything is bought or cleaned. Good compression means the motor is worth the work; a scored bore means the conversation changes.
2. Ignition. Points, condenser, coils, and the flywheel magnets checked for strength. This is where vintage-specific knowledge matters — a magneto system fails differently from anything modern, and testing it needs different assumptions.
3. Fuel system, completely. Carburettor stripped, float assessed and replaced if cork, needle and seat, new kit throughout, tank cleaned, all rubber replaced. There is no partial version of this that works.
4. Water pump. Non-negotiable. The impeller in a motor that's sat is not an impeller any more. Why that matters.
5. Lower unit. Gear oil drained and read, seals assessed. More here.
6. Recoil starter. Springs and ropes perish.
7. On some 1950s OMC motors — the pressure tank. Two-line pressurised fuel systems have their own failure modes and their own parts, and a lot of people mistake them for something broken.
How far do you want to go?
Three honest levels, and most owners want the first:
Running restoration. Make it start, run and pump water reliably. Cosmetics left as-is — patina intact. This is the best value by a wide margin and what most owners actually want.
Running plus tidy. Mechanical work, plus cleaning, correct decals, and repainting where needed. Looks right on the back of a boat without being a show motor.
Full cosmetic restoration. Stripped, correct paint, reproduction decals, everything detailed. Time-intensive and priced accordingly. Worth it for a motor with history attached, rarely worth it on economics alone.

Is it actually worth restoring?
The honest answer depends on why you're asking.
On economics alone — usually not. A restored 1957 Johnson costs more to bring back than a running modern kicker of the same power. If you need a motor that works, buy a motor that works.
On any other basis — often yes. Motors that came with a boat, a family motor, a specific model someone has wanted for years, or a genuinely collectible example. These are worth doing, and doing properly.
The deciding factor is nearly always compression, not age. A 1955 motor with even compression is a straightforward project. One with a scored bore needs a donor powerhead, and that changes both the cost and whether it's still the same motor in any meaningful sense.
We'll tell you which you have before you commit. A compression test and an inspection is a small cost against finding out four months in.
Restoring one yourself?
Plenty of people do, and it's a good way to spend a winter.

What it costs
Vintage work is quoted per motor after assessment — the range between "carb kit and a water pump" and "everything, plus cosmetics" is too wide to publish honestly.

Frequently asked questions
Can you still get parts for a vintage outboard?
For the common Johnson, Evinrude and Mercury families of that era, generally yes — impeller kits, ignition parts, carburettor kits and even decals. Rarer marques sometimes need a donor motor. We'll tell you upfront rather than starting a job we can't finish.
Is restoring an old outboard motor worth it?
Rarely on economics, often on every other basis. Compression is the deciding factor — even compression means a straightforward project, a scored bore means a donor powerhead.
Why does my vintage motor flood?
If it's pre-1970 there's a good chance the cork float has absorbed fuel because ethanol stripped its lacquer. It's one of the most common faults we see on motors of that era.
Should I use ethanol-free fuel?
Yes, for anything of this age. Ethanol attacks cork floats, period rubber and old tank linings, and the cost difference is trivial against redoing a fuel system.
Do you do cosmetic restoration or just mechanical?
Both, and they're priced separately — most owners want a running restoration with the patina left alone, which is also the best value.
What's a pressure tank and do I have one?
Some 1950s OMC motors use a pressurised two-line fuel system rather than a fuel pump. They're often assumed to be broken when they're working exactly as designed.
