Outboard Losing Power or Bogging Down

Power loss splits cleanly into three causes with very different price tags — fuel starvation, a spun prop hub, or lost compression — and a compression test tells you which within minutes.

First: does the engine rev, or not?

This one question separates most of the possibilities.

Engine revs high but the boat doesn't go → the problem is between the engine and the water. Spun prop hub, damaged prop, or slipping drive. The engine is fine.

Engine won't rev, boat won't plane → the engine isn't making power. Fuel, spark, compression or restriction.

Boat planes but tops out below normal rpm → usually fuel delivery under load, or the wrong prop.

Revs higher than normal at the same speed → ventilation, cavitation, or a prop problem.

Knowing your motor's normal wide-open-throttle rpm makes all of this far easier. If you don't, it's worth recording once when everything is right.


The spun hub — check this first, it's free

Most propellers drive through a rubber bushing designed to absorb shock. Hit something, or subject it to enough heat and age, and the rubber lets go — the hub spins inside the prop instead of driving it.

The signature: engine revs freely, boat accelerates poorly or not at all, often worse under load and sometimes fine at low throttle.

How to check: mark the prop hub and the prop with a line across both. Run the boat. If the marks no longer line up, the hub has spun.

Cost: a re-hub or replacement prop — the cheapest item on this page by a wide margin. Always worth eliminating before anyone starts talking about the engine.


Fuel starvation under load

The most common genuine engine cause, and it hides at idle.

A motor idles on very little fuel. At wide-open throttle it needs many times that, and a restriction that's invisible at the dock becomes the limiting factor at speed.

Where it restricts:

The tell: it accelerates normally, runs for a minute or two at speed, then falls flat — and recovers if you back off. That pattern is a restriction almost every time.

Lost compression — the expensive one

If fuel, prop and drag are ruled out, the question becomes mechanical.

One cylinder down on a multi-cylinder motor produces exactly this: it runs, it just won't make full power, and it often sounds slightly rough at idle.

Causes: worn or broken rings, a scored bore, a burnt valve on a four-stroke, or a head gasket.

Overheating history matters here. If the motor ever ran hot, this becomes considerably more likely — damage is cumulative and invisible.

A compression test settles it in minutes and should happen before any parts are bought. Assessment and rebuild analysis.


Ignition under load

Coils can pass a static spark test and still fail under cylinder pressure. A motor that runs cleanly at low throttle and breaks up at high rpm is a classic weak-ignition pattern — and one of the reasons diagnosing power loss on the dock can be misleading. It often needs testing under actual load.


The order we work through it

  1. Prop and hub — free to check, cheapest to fix
  2. Fuel delivery — filter, vent, bulb, lines
  3. Drag and prop pitch — bottom, weight, trim
  4. Compression — the answer that changes the conversation
  5. Ignition under load — if everything above is clean

Working in that order means the cheap answers get eliminated first. Working backwards is how people spend rebuild money on a fuel filter problem.


FAQ

My outboard revs but the boat won't move. What is that?
Almost certainly a spun prop hub. Mark the hub and prop, run it, and see if the marks stay aligned.

Why does my outboard bog down at full throttle?
Fuel starvation under load, most commonly a partially blocked filter or a vent problem. It runs fine at idle because idle needs a fraction of the fuel.

My motor accelerates then falls flat after a minute. Why?
Classic restriction. It runs on what's downstream of the blockage, then can't keep up.

Can a fouled bottom really cost that much speed?
Yes, a surprising amount — and it makes the engine work harder for the same result.

How do I know if it's the prop or the engine?
If the engine reaches normal rpm, the engine is probably fine and the problem is the prop or drive. If it won't reach rpm, look at the engine.

Could this be low compression?
Possibly, especially with an overheat in the history. A compression test is quick and definitive, and it's worth doing before buying anything.

What's the cheapest thing to check first?
The prop hub. It costs nothing to check and it's a common cause.
