When a jet boat stops hitting its old top speed, the engine is usually fine — the clearance between impeller and wear ring has opened up, and that gap is measurable in about fifteen minutes.

How a jet pump actually loses performance
The impeller spins inside a close-fitting sleeve called the wear ring. The gap between the blade tips and that ring is measured in thousandths of an inch, and it's what makes the pump a pump.
As the gap opens, water slips past the blades instead of being pushed through. The engine does the same work and less of it reaches the water.
Two things widen it, usually together: debris damage — gravel and sand nicking blade tips and scoring the ring — and ordinary wear, since every hour of running erodes both surfaces slightly.
The symptom is gradual, which is why owners so often chase it as an engine problem for a season before anyone measures the pump.
The symptoms
- Lost top-end speed with the engine reaching normal rpm
- Poor hole shot — slow to get on plane, especially loaded
- Engine revs higher than it used to for the same speed
- Cavitation — a slipping, surging sensation under acceleration
- Vibration, usually from an impeller damaged unevenly
The distinguishing feature: the engine sounds and behaves normally. If it reaches its usual rpm and the boat is slower, the pump is the place to look — not the fuel system, not the ignition.
We measure before we sell anything
The clearance is checked with a feeler gauge at the blade tips, in multiple positions around the impeller. It takes about fifteen minutes and it produces a number.
That number decides the job:
Within spec — the pump isn't your problem. Look at prop-side wear, hull condition, weight, or the engine. We'll tell you and charge you for the check, not a rebuild.
Slightly open, blades sound — often a wear ring alone.
Open, with damaged blade tips — impeller reconditioning or replacement plus a wear ring.
Heavily damaged, scored ring — both, and worth inspecting the bearing carrier and seals while it's apart.
Nobody should be selling you an impeller without measuring first. It's the fastest, cheapest step in the whole diagnosis.
Reconditioning or replacement?
Reconditioning — blade tips built up and reshaped to restore the profile and clearance. Cost-effective on a good impeller with edge damage, and often the better value.
Replacement — where blades are bent, cracked or eroded beyond restoration.
Re-pitching — worth knowing about. Impeller pitch can be changed to suit how you actually use the boat: heavier loads, more passengers, different altitude. If the boat has always felt slightly wrong rather than having got worse, pitch may be the answer rather than clearance.
While the pump is apart
- Wear ring — replaced if scored
- Bearing carrier and seals — wear items, and a leak here eventually takes the bearing
- Driveshaft and coupler condition
- Intake grate and ride plate — bent or damaged grates cause cavitation that destroys impellers
- Reverse gate and linkage
Fitting a new impeller behind a damaged intake grate just feeds the next one the same problem.

My jet boat lost speed but the engine runs fine. What is it?
Almost certainly impeller-to-wear-ring clearance. The engine still makes power; the pump converts less of it.
How do I know if it's the pump or the engine?
If the engine reaches its normal rpm and the boat is slower, it's the pump. If the engine won't reach rpm, look at the engine.
Can a damaged impeller be repaired?
Often, yes. Edge damage is frequently reconditionable, which is cheaper than replacement.
How often does an impeller need doing?
Not on a fixed interval — it depends entirely on what you've run over. Worth a clearance check annually and after any debris strike.
I sucked up gravel. Should I check it now?
Yes, before the next trip. A damaged impeller cavitates, and cavitation accelerates damage to both the impeller and the ring.
What is re-pitching?
Changing the impeller's pitch to suit your typical load. Useful if the boat has always felt under- or over-geared rather than having got slower.
