Evinrude & Johnson Outboard Repair

BRP stopped building Evinrude outboards in 2020, which left a large installed base of good motors around Columbia County with nowhere obvious to take them — those owners are some of our best customers.

If you own one, you already know the problem

The motor is fine. Finding someone to work on it is the problem.

Dealers moved on. Shops that never specialised in the brand are reluctant. And owners get told, with varying degrees of accuracy, that parts are drying up and they'd be better off repowering.

Some of that is true and a lot of it isn't. Here's our honest read:


E-TEC

Direct-injected two-strokes, and mechanically an unusual proposition: no crankcase oil to change, long service intervals, and genuinely low maintenance compared with a four-stroke — provided the scheduled service actually gets done.

The oil injection system is the thing to watch. E-TEC depends on it entirely, and unlike a premix motor there's no fallback if it stops delivering. Testing it rather than assuming it works is the single most valuable check on these engines.

Scheduled service is real and it's deferred constantly, largely because the intervals are long enough that owners forget they exist and nothing feels wrong in the meantime.

Diagnostics are brand-specific. E-TEC engine management needs BRP software to read faults and perform some procedures.

Classic Johnson and Evinrude two-strokes

The pre-E-TEC motors — carburetted, points or CDI ignition, going back decades. Johnson and Evinrude are the same motors with different badges for most of their history, which is good news: parts commonality across the two is extensive.

What we see most:

Power packs, stators and triggers. The classic OMC ignition failure set. They fail in characteristic ways and they're diagnosable — but only by testing components individually rather than swapping the cheapest one first, which is how people spend a lot of money on these motors.

VRO pumps. The variable-ratio oiling system on many older motors is widely distrusted, and plenty of owners have converted to premix rather than rely on it. That's a legitimate choice — we'll test yours and give you a straight answer either way rather than defaulting to "convert it."

Carburettors, gummed from ethanol fuel and long storage. Two-stroke work.

Should you repower?

The question every Evinrude owner has been asked, usually by someone selling motors.

Compression first, always. Even compression means a fundamentally sound motor, and repowering a sound motor is a large cost to solve a support problem rather than a mechanical one.

Repowering makes sense when the motor genuinely needs major work, when a specific part really is unobtainable, or when you were going to repower anyway.

It doesn't simply because the brand was discontinued. We'll run the comparison honestly — including telling you when repowering is right.

FAQ

Can you still get parts for Evinrude and Johnson?
For the common families, generally yes, and better than most owners have been told. Some items are genuinely hard, and we'll tell you before starting rather than partway through.

Should I repower now that Evinrude is discontinued?
Not on that basis alone. Compression decides it — a sound motor is worth keeping, and a discontinued badge isn't a mechanical fault.

Do you have BRP diagnostic software?
Answer explicitly.

Is my Johnson the same as an Evinrude?
For most of their history, yes — same motors, different badges, with extensive parts commonality.

What is VRO and should I disable it?
The variable-ratio oiling system on many older motors. Widely distrusted, and converting to premix is a legitimate choice — but we'd test yours first rather than assume.

My E-TEC has never had its scheduled service. Is that a problem?
Worth doing. The intervals are long, which is exactly why they get forgotten, and the oil system is the part you don't want to find out about the hard way.

What are power packs and why do they fail?
The ignition module on older OMC motors. They're a known failure item and they're testable — worth diagnosing rather than replacing parts speculatively.

Are these motors worth keeping?
Usually yes. Good compression, available parts and a mechanic willing to work on them is all it takes.
