On a cruiser, the boat is the hard part — hauling or relocating a 34-footer costs more than most of the repairs, so yacht engine repair only makes economic sense done in the slip.

The economics of a bigger boat

Below about 25 feet, moving the boat to the mechanic is an inconvenience. Above it, moving the boat is the expense.

Hauling costs real money before anyone touches the engine — lift fees, yard time, blocking, and getting the boat there and back.

Relocating means crew and a weather window, and if the engine is the problem you may not be able to move it at all.

Yard time is measured in weeks, not hours, and you're paying for the berth throughout.

For a liveaboard, the boat leaving is a housing problem, not just a boating one.

So the calculation is different from a trailered boat: the work should come to the boat unless there's a genuine reason it can't. That's most of what we do here.


Where these boats live on the lower Columbia

Most of our cruiser work is on the Columbia and the Multnomah Channel — Hayden Island and the Jantzen Beach moorages, Tomahawk Bay, the Sauvie Island moorages, and the St. Helens end of the channel.

We're licensed and insured to the standard those moorages require, and we'll get on a vendor file in advance if yours needs it. Service area.


What three months in saltwater does — a charter boat's steering

A deep-sea fishing charter, run as a business, left sitting in a saltwater marina for about three months between seasons.

When the owner went to move it, the entire steering system had seized. Not stiff — seized. Saltwater had got into it and corroded the whole assembly solid.

Getting it apart took two days, a forklift and an F450 pulling on it. It ended up needing a complete new drive and steering system. Once that was done he was back out running charters, but the layup had cost him a great deal more than a winterisation would have.

The lesson isn't "don't leave your boat in the water." It's that saltwater and time do something fresh water doesn't, and a boat that sits in it needs preparing for that — flushing, protecting and exercising the systems that seize. If your boat spends any time in salt, or you're bringing one back from the coast, that's a different maintenance conversation from a Columbia River boat and worth having before the layup rather than after.


Gas or diesel

Both, and they're different services:

Marine diesel → — most cruisers over about 35 feet, and nearly all trawlers. Fault diagnosis, fuel systems, cooling and scheduled service.

Gas inboard and sterndrive → — common on smaller cruisers and older boats.

Twin installations are standard on many of these boats, and worth knowing: engines fitted together age together. When one needs something, the other usually does too — which is an argument for servicing both at once rather than paying the access cost twice.


What we handle — and what we don't

We do: main engine diagnostics and repair, scheduled service, fuel systems, cooling, charging and batteries, engine mounts and alignment, exhaust systems, and repower assessment.

Ask us about: generators, thrusters, watermakers, air conditioning and heating. Confirm which of these you service — cruisers carry a lot of auxiliary equipment and owners will ask.

We don't do: hull, gelcoat and structural work, canvas, rigging, or electronics installation. We'll usually know someone.

Being clear about the boundary saves everyone a wasted visit.


Scheduled service on a bigger boat

Cruisers reward planned maintenance more than any other category, because unplanned failures are so much more expensive to resolve.

Twin engines double the intervals but not the visit — most of the cost is access and mobilisation.

Hour meters actually get used on these boats, which makes proper interval tracking realistic. We keep a record per engine.

Liveaboards need reliability differently. Heat, power and hot water often depend on systems the engine supports.

FAQ

Do you service boats at the moorage?
Yes — that's the entire model, and on a cruiser it's usually the only sensible option.

Can you work on twin engines?
Yes, and it's more efficient to do both together since access and travel are most of the cost.

Do you service generators?
Confirm policy — this is the most common follow-up question from cruiser owners.

My boat is a liveaboard. Can you work around us being aboard?
Yes. Tell us what needs to stay running and we'll plan around it.

Is my engine gas or diesel?
Diesels have no spark plugs or ignition leads. If you can't find plug leads, it's a diesel. Diesel repair · gas inboard.

Do you work on trawlers?
Yes — trawler diesels are core diesel work.

How do you handle moorage access?
We carry the licensing and insurance moorages ask for, and we'll get on a vendor file in advance if yours requires one.

Is it worth repowering an older cruiser?
Sometimes — and the arithmetic is different from a small boat because the engine is a smaller fraction of the boat's value. We'll run it honestly.
